Supporting Disabled Women at IWD2022 Belfast

As women activists from around Northern Ireland gathered in Writers' Square, Belfast to celebrate International Womans' Day, we eagerly awaited the speeches from the disabled community.

Changing Places changes places

Arriving early on what turned out to be a chilly, but wonderfully sunny Saturday morning, Writers’ Square was just in the throws of joining the day. Still naked of any activity, a few people were going about their business visiting local convenience stores or grabbing breakfast in a local cafe. We didn’t have to wait too long for the event organisers to arrive and begin directing those of us who were ready to set up.

One of the many entertainment acts was first to start rehearsing and this quickly brought attention to what might be happening in the square today, whilst information stalls, food huts, bunting and posters were being erected to support and attract people to the event.

Once underway, there was a hive of activity and it wasn’t long before we were attracting users from the disabled patrons in attendance. It was great to meet new people, whilst welcoming those more familiar is always a pleasure. Greta, Christine and Lilia all came to say hello and it was great to be able to offer our support when it was time to speak. Being part of a society that is fighting for rights and equality is hard enough, having to bring this from two or more perspectives can be really arduous and all three served the disabled community proudly.

Activists from across the spectrum spoke eloquently, but always with a passion for something that is still an injustice to them and affects opportunities in their lives as well as many other women across the world. AccessoLoo was happy to be a part of their day and lend support to the disabled women who should be given access to equitable treatment every day and in every place.
